Indicators of successful impact. Legislature behavior is changing to trip us up!

Indicators of successful impact. Legislature behavior is changing to trip us up!

Senator Yen games the rules this week and is proving to be an embarrassment to the Oklahoma Senate. First he published a Committee Substitute changing out the language for SB83 only a three hours notice before the Senate HHS Committee met. So much for the historical 48 hour notice. Then later in the week on Wednesday afternoon he called for a special session of the HHS Committee on Thursday morning for a single bill concerning midwives. Apparently this compromise the integrity of the Senate too much and he got called on it. A notice went out the next morning canceling this special meeting of the committee. In both cases it seems clear that Sen. Yen was attempting to avoid citizen involvement at these committee meetings showing that even he believes we can have an impact.

With this evidence of our impact let's keep going!

Protecting Life

HR1004 This resolution calls on the state executive and judicial branches to enforce current laws to stop abortions in Oklahoma. Considering that Governor Fallin vetoed a very good pro-life bill last year and the courts continually shut down the pro-life legislation that has passed in recent years this reprimand of sorts is fitting.

Status This resolution can be heard on the House Floor at any time but must first be place on the House Floor Agenda.

Action – Call the House Floor leader, Rep. Jon Echols ((405) 557-7354) and request that the bill be heard immediately.

Protecting our Representative Republic

HB1106 (Rep. Cleveland) – This bill basically reduces the number of voting days we have in Oklahoma. Have you seen those voting days that seem out of season and you don't hear about? Often they are on such matters as school bonds. Those who want school bonds know of the votes well in advance. Often those of us who may vote against such bonds don't seem to hear about it in time to do some research and arrange our schedules to vote. I believe this is intentional and defeats the premise of being a representative republic.

Status This bill passed in committee and can now be heard on the House Floor.

Action – Call the House Floor leader, Rep. Jon Echols ((405) 557-7354) and request that the bill be heard immediately.

Parental Rights with Vaccine Choice

Oppose SB83 (Sen. Yen) – A committee substitute was published three hours before the Senate HHS Committee met. This bill calls for a video to be watched before a person can claim the exemption. The new language might possibly hold a parent accountable for not vaccinating their child and have them forcibly removed from your home by CPS. There is a combination of bills this year that could play into this cause. Unfortunately, this new language complies with the Senate culture of compromise being a virtue.

Status – The committee substitute was published on the Senate HHS Committee agenda a short three hours before the committee met. So much for the 48 hour notice. It passed and can now be heard on the Senate Floor.

Action – Call the Senate Floor Leader, Sen. Greg Treat ((405) 521-5632) and request that he NOT put SB83 on the Senate Floor for a vote.
